What is going on in Duncanville?

What is going on in Duncanville?  This has been a decade to watch in the council chambers.  We have seen a council member restrained and removed from a meeting, a council member arrested for an incident at a massage parlor, councilmembers suing each other, city suing councilmembers and now another councilmember has resigned.

District 5 Councilmember Johnette Jameson has resigned her position ahead of a Public Hearing looking into possible violations of the Home Rule Charter.  Jameson is being accused of asking city officials to fire or remove employees from their positions without using the proper protocol for doing so.  Although, she has resigned and the council has accepted the resignation, she is still required to serve until a replacement is found.

The hearing is scheduled for 10 am on November 22nd at the local high school.

SAS Fitness: Someday

Someday. This is a word many people use when contemplating life goals, especially when it comes to health and fitness. "Someday I will get to the gym." "Someday I will hire a personal trainer." "Someday I will start eating healthier." Unfortunately for many people, someday never comes. This is the one area of life that is so easy for people to place on the back burner. They get so busy and caught up in the demands of day-to-day life that they convince themselves they have no time to invest in the their health. Interestingly, they always seem to find time to do other important things such as changing the oil in their vehicles or checking their bank statement. Shouldn't your health and well-being be just as important? The answer is obviously “yes” but many people don't see it that way. This is especially true for younger people who are in good health and are convinced they will live forever. It is not until their body begins to fail them that they realize how vital it is to maintain your health.

Even as a persornal trainer, I often find it challenging to fit my workouts into my daily schedule. Nobody said it was easy. Nothing worthwhile in life comes easy. However, the payoff is well worth the time and effort. Most people could find 20 minutes in a day to workout most days of the week but they choose otherwise. They easily fall into the vicious cycle of "someday". Their health gets placed on hold until one day they realize time has passed them by and they are beginning to develop (or have already developed) life-threatening illnesses. The real tragedy here is how easily such a scenario can be avoided.

The good news is that it is never too late to begin an exercise program. Many people who have lived a sedentary lifestyle most of their lives believe they are too far gone to make any difference. This couldn't be further from the truth. The human body has a keen ability to adapt and people who finally make the decision to get moving and adopt a workout routine will be amazed at how well their bodies will adapt and transform. Isn't it worth your time to look and feel better?

"Someday" is here. Get up and get moving! This can be something as simple as doing a few push-ups, cleaning the house or mowing the lawn. Don't let another day pass by without making this commitment to yourself. Your body will thank you for it.

SAS FITNESS: 5 EXCUSES

Answers to 5 Common Excuses for not Exercising or Hiring a Personal Trainer

1. I Don't Have Time to Exercise-
In today's hectic, fast-paced world, most of us are stretched for time. The demands of our daily lives consume almost every waking minute. However, take a few moments to assess how you spend your time each day. How often do you watch TV, check your Facebook page, chat with friends, etc.? These are times you could possibly devote to exercise. If you could squeeze in 15-20 minutes a day at least 3 times a week, you will do wonders for your health and well-being. Other tactics you could try are getting up a half-hour earlier in the morning or exercising during your lunch break. A personal trainer can help you evaluate your daily schedule and formulate an exercise plan that fits your lifestyle.

2. I Can't Afford It.
This is a plausible argument in today's economy. Most people have to watch every penny they spend. However, think about the subtle ways you spend your money. The daily cup of Starbucks, the daily lunch at your favorite fast-food place or the weekly happy hour meetings with co-workers. Now think about how much these things cost you every month and you may begin to see the point. For what you spend on such subtle things, you could more than afford to invest your money toward your health and live a better life. A much wiser investment indeed!

3. I Don't Like to Work Out
Many people have various reasons for not enjoying exercise. Some of the more common reasons are boredom, lack of motivation, insecurity and discomfort. This is all the more reason to hire a professional trainer to help you overcome these obstacles. You would be amazed at how much more enjoyable exercise can be when you have someone to motivate you and help you overcome the obstacles that have been holding you back for years. For example, if you feel pain and discomfort when exercising, chances are you are performing the exercises incorrectly and putting your body at risk for injury. A personal trainer will ensure you are performing the exercises correctly and within the appropriate capacity to ensure your comfort and safety.

4. I Can Train Myself
True, but are you doing it correctly and are you adhering to all appropriate safety constraints? Many people, especially those who have been exercising regularly for many years, don't feel the need to hire a professional trainer. They may have taken advice from a gym buddy or watched an exercise video and think that's all the information they need to exercise appropriately. However, they may be doing more harm than good by not following proper guidelines. This is where a personal trainer can help. Even though you may not be a newbie in the gym, you also may not be performing exercises with proper form and therefore placing your body at unnecessary risk of injury. Also, you may have hit a plateau in your exercise program and are beginning to see fewer and fewer benefits as a result. This is another area where a personal trainer can help you. When your current program is no longer producing desired results, a trainer can help you redesign and modify your current program so that you can take your health and fitness to the next level.

5. I Once Had a Bad Experience with A Personal Trainer
This is not uncommon but like people in general, not all trainers are the same. The key word here is "professionalism". Although all personal trainers are expected to act with maturity, integrity and professionalism, this doesn't always happen. This is unfortunate and unfair to the client. However, shopping for a personal trainer is much like shopping for a new car, you have to keep test driving and shopping around until you find one that meets your needs. It is easy to get discouraged after having just one bad experience but you owe it to yourself to keep trying until you find the right one. The best way to do this is to make sure you do your research before hiring a trainer. Double check their credentials, ask for references and search the internet for client reviews. These sources should give you a vast amount of information to make a more educated decision.

Until next time, work hard, stay motivated and be safe!

Immigration Reform Dead, again?

I thought they said immigration died in December and 3 months before that and 3 months before that. How many times can it be pronounced dead?

Immigration reform is needed and will continue to live as long as there are people willing to fight for it, no matter who loses an election.

POLITICO - Eric Cantor loss kills immigration reform
By SEUNG MIN KIM | 6/10/14 11:40 PM EDT Updated: 6/11/14 12:19 AM EDT

Immigration reform is almost certainly dead on Capitol Hill this year.

Many top sources close to the issue privately acknowledged after House Majority Leader Eric Cantor’s shocking defeat Tuesday night that the already uphill battle for immigration reform was dealt the knockout blow.

Coming off President Barack Obama’s re-election, immigration reform was seen as an issue both parties could deal with quickly. Democrats wanted to deliver on promises made to their Latino backers and Republicans wanted to get the issue off the table to avoid reliving the electoral demographic nightmare of 2012.

Cesar Chavez from News Taco

Check out this article from News Taco about Cesar Chavez.

“We need a leader, not a martyr!” pleads the brother of beloved labor leader César Chávez in a memorable scene from the film of the same name. The farmworker movement, largely attributed to Chávez and the United Farmworkers Union (UFW), was at a critical juncture in its development when, in 1988, the leader goes on a 36-day fast to call attention to deplorable working conditions and to emphasize the importance of non-violent tactics.
César Chávez, directed by Diego Luna, opened in major theaters on March 28th.

In Generation Sex, Teatro Luna bares all without blushing as they explore how technology has transformed sex, love, and our relationships. With the new rules of feminism now reduced to 140 characters or less, the Lunáticas dissect the tragically outdated ideas of femininity women are still forced to perform, tackling questions like: What is the art of seduction in a digital world that leaves little to the imagination? Can we Instagram loneliness? Is it possible to resist our avatars and be our true selves online? Has Facebook flipped how we define family? From sexting to Skype to the dark side streets of cyberspace, the Ladies of Luna explode how hollow soundbytes and played out listicles shape today's quest for love and satisfaction, with a touch warmer than your welcome screen.

This is Merica speak Merican

Coca Cola has sparked controversy with their multilingual rendition of America The Beautiful that aired during the Superbowl.

A lot of people enjoyed it and thought it represented America.  A lot of people hated it because this is America and that song should always be in English.  Some thought it was the National Anthem and they have their own problem to work through like demanding a refund on their education.

I am not going to waste my time on the thinly veiled racism on the reactions in the Twitterverse.  I want to focus on the so called Americans who are offended by the commercial.  We all know the US does not have an official language so please stop claiming it's English or Merican.

If you really understood the US, then you know the closest thing to an "official language" is Commerce.  What do you mean Commerce? Glad I asked.

We will speak any language it takes to make money.  Just look at all the businesses around, they will hire people who are fluent in any language they need to sell products, services, or ideas to.

Coke did not make that commercial for patriotic reasons, they made it so they can sell Coke to all the people who associate themselves with those languages or cultures.

Banks hire people who speak all kinds of languages so that they can have those paychecks deposited into their banks.

The Republican Party, who have a lot of English only members, run commercials on Spanish Language TV in Spanish.  Why? Because they want the support in the next election and the campaign contributions that come with it.

We know this to be true but we monolingual people fight it because we know we are becoming more and more obsolete in today's market place.

This is what the free market has dictated so get on board.

House conservatives rule out immigration this year

Did Lucy just move the immigration football again?

This once again proves the problem is not Republicans or Democrats, it is conservatives.  Pres Obama softens his stance and immigration reformists start debating the necessity of a pathway to earned citizenship and conservatives walk away.  They walk away because there was a chance of getting something done and putting politics before country, they don't want to hurt their campaign chances.

Andres' Rant: Drug Test Congress

Republicans want to drug test anyone who receives govt assistance, well after FL Republican Congressman had to step down for drug charges and the NY Republican threatened to throw a reporter off an effing balcony, I think the first to be tested should be Congress.  They get tax payer's money and we need to make to sure it is not spent on drugs.

Cowboys demote Monte Kiffin

Cowboys had Kiffin and Marinelli switch roles.  I am okay with this decision.  It allows the defense to still learn from the creator of the Tampa 2 and have a coordinator who can handle the day to coordinator duties.

Also, Callahan is no longer play calling, thank you Jesus.

Texas Lt Governor's Debate

In Dallas, Republican candidates running for Lt Governor debated each other.  It was the first televised opportunity to size them up.

For the most part, it was what you expected, standard conservative positions.  The thing that made this debate interesting was the moderators.  They did their best to make the candidates answer the question.  In some cases that was not an easy task.

In Sen Dan Patrick's case, he only answered questions he asked himself.  My favorite Patrick moment was when he declared our children had the right to be confused.

The only rational person seemed to be Jerry Patterson with his stance on teaching creationism and medicinal marijuana.

I am interested to see who gets the bump and who the public picks as the winner of the debate.  In my opinion, Patterson won.
