Play GM

Okay, I think enough time has passed between now and the Dallas Cowboy's loss to the NY Giants that maybe I can talk a little about it without getting so pissed off.  All Dallas fans saw a repeat of the week before: no defense in the 4th quarter, an offensive driving to get into a game winning field goal situation, and a kicker missing the winning kick after getting iced.  Wow, really?! Two weeks in a row!

It was an interesting game.  I spent the last two minutes of the 4th quarter knelt down in front of the TV trying not to yell so I would not wake up my kids.  The lead changed so many times and the Cowboys were up by 12 points late in the 4th, but the week before played out again.  (Read the first paragraph. It still hurts to explain so I cannot re-type what happened.)  We are in Dallas and we need to find someone or something to blame for this loss to a division rival where we gave up sole ownership of 1st place in our division.

The conversations I have had seem to blame Romo for this loss.  "We will never win anything with Romo as our quarterback" and "Romo sucks" were in the same conversation and uttered by the same person.  Others agree with the sentiment and think Romo is the sole problem of the team.  "He doesn't look like a leader." "He missed a wide open receiver."  "He is too soft."  It makes you wonder if these people are watching the same game I am.  Hatred for Romo is really starting to look like a medical condition.  I will just say they say suffer from "Romo-phobia" for now on.

The Romo-phobes don't seem to understand that when your quarterback leads his offense to 34 points in a game, they should win.  Romo lead the team to 34 points on Sunday.  34 points!  The defense gave up 35 points.  (The offense gave up 2 on the safety)  Why aren't the Romo-phobes pointing the finger at Rob Ryan and his defense or Dave Campo and his secondary?  Seriously, on the last drive it seemed like the Cowboys moved the ball on penalties for the Giants more than Eli Manning did with passes.

What do the Romo-phobes want?  I have an idea.  They want Romo to play pass rusher, safety, corner, and call the defensive plays too because a "real" leader does that.  The fact of the matter is that Romo had a really good game.  He went 21 for 31 with 321 yards.  His QB rating was 141.3 and threw for 4 touchdowns.  4 TOUCHDOWNS.  (OOPS, I AM GETTING MAD AGAIN.  I AM TYPING IN ALL CAPS.  BREATHE BREATH BREathe breathe breathe....That's better) Oh, and about the pass where he missed the wide open receiver? The wide open receiver took the blame because he lost the ball in the lights!

If we want to play fan General Manager (GM), then let's play.  First and foremost, FIRE DAVE CAMPO.  The secondary does not communicate well with each other and the person responsible for the secondary is Dave Campo.  On a lot of plays they look lost and argue with each other about who covers who right up to the snap of the ball.  Secondly, get Ryan the talent he needs in the secondary.  Thirdly, fire Jerry Jones from GM.  He is a great owner and let him focus on that side of the business. It is time for Stephen Jones to step in and run the front office.

Romo-phobes, pay attention to the games and join us Romo-sexuals on Sundays to root for Romo and the Boys.  Who knows you may move on up to being Romo-curious!

TNA Show's Review of Cara Mia's Nuestra Pastorela

Cara Mia Theatre has done it again. The hosts of The TNA Show (Andres, Turo, and John Anthony) spent an evening at the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas to catch their latest production, Nuestra Pastorela. What another great show!

Nuestra Pastorela is a play for the entire family. It is a whimsical twist on the traditional shepherd's journey to Bethlehem to see the Holy Family. In this version, the main characters are not only shepherds; they are clown shepherds. Cara Mia's production has the Devil devise a twisted plan for the shepherd's journey, with an updated and hilarious flaunting of his treacherous ways.  They are able to repel the devil and his power of temptation the only way clowns can: with goodness, innocence, and laughter.

I really enjoyed the mix of script and improv. The use of the audience as props and participants, guarantees a different experience every night.  The TNA Show, fully recommends this show for you and your entire family. With a refreshing perspective on this holiday classic,  Nuestra Pastorela will sure to have you wanting your very own clown nose.

Cara Mia hits another homerun with writers Jeffry Farrel and David Lozano's bilingual or trilingual, recognizing clown speech as a language , staging of a time-honored biblical adventure.
The performances are held at the Latino Cultural Center for three weekends, Thursday through Saturday up to Dec 17th and the show starts at 7:30 pm. Also, on December 9th and 10th Cara Mia is offering free tickets for kids under 13. When you purchase tickets by calling 214-717-5297 or at the box office, just mention the code word "Pingo" for the offer. Enjoy the show!

Cara Mia: Nuestra Pastorela

Our friends at Cara Mia Theatre are at it again!  They have another great production in the works for you; just in time for the holidays.  Nuestra Pastorela is "a family-friendly spin on a Mexican holiday tradition."

It will run from December 2-17 and all shows will begin at 7:30 pm at the Latino Cultural Center in Dallas.  I would recommend attending December 2nd for the Special Opening Night Reception.  The Reception will begin at 6 pm and the play will begin at 7:30 pm.  Below is a description from Cara Mia's website:

"This unique and zany adaptation of the Mexican shepherd's tale features all the usual suspects. You'll see the Angel Gabriel, the shepherds traveling to Bethlehem, and the bumbling devils, depicted in the playful style of the Mexican folk tradition, plotting the shepherds' doom by tempting them with the seven mortal sins. When the shepherds don the "smallest mask in the world" (the red clown nose), chaos ensues and hilarity abounds with broad physical comedy and slapstick. You won't want to miss this one-of-a-kind production for anyone who is a child at heart!"

For tickets and more information, call 214-717-5297 or visit www.caramiatheatre.com

Best Scary Movies

Halloween is just a few days away and I have been thinking about which movies are my favorite scary movies.  I do not have a long mental database of Horror movies or movies in general, but I do remember a few as a kid that scared the bejeezus out of me.

The first one that comes to mind is "It."  Even to this day a keep a close eye on clowns or storm drains around me, not usually around a lot of clowns but when I am every step is accounted for.  Penwise and Bozo look very similar and maybe we should exhume Bozo just to make sure he is there!

Another movie would be "Nightmare On Elm Street", I would lay in bed at night and tell myself "Don't dream of Freddie! Don't dream of Freddie!"  I still wonder if you die in your dreams, does that mean you will die in reality?  Does anyone know? Let me know, this is a question that really does keep me up at night.

I know this is a short list and there are probably hundreds of more movies to add to the list, but I will end my list with "Freaks" (1932).  Periodically in the parking lots of abandoned shopping centers you will see a pop carnival, circus, and/or sideshows and because of this movie I will not stop.  This movie freaked me out so bad that when I am near children (even my own), midgets, dwarfs, or vertically challenged people in general, I listen very closely and make sure none are chanting "Gooble-Goble! Gooble-Goble!"  You are not going to get me carnies, I am not one of you!

I was curious to know what other people associated with the show and my wife thought about some of the best scary movies, so I asked.

Co-Hosts
John Anthony:  "Dirty Dancing"
Turo: "Nightmare On Elm Street", "Freddy Vs Jason"

Fluffers
Vicenzo and Lou:  "It", "Saw", "13 Ghosts", "Paranormal Activity"
Rich: "Nightmare On Elm Street", "Friday The 13th", "Hellraiser", "The Exorcist", "Halloween", "The Omen", "Event Horizon"

My Wife:  "The Shining", "The Others", and "It", "Dawn Of The Dead", "The Sixth Sense", "Killer Clowns From Outer Space"

Best Hispanic Movies

Now in order to accurately do this, I needed to think of movies that were mainstream, as far as came out in theatres, or whatever they had in the 80's, which is necessary for some of these movies. These are not in any type of order, I will let you decide on that. With that said let’s get started.

Now the first best Hispanic movie that comes to mind for any Hispanic is "Selena"!  This movie will be on anyone's list, if not for the fact that Selena is an icon to Hispanics, then its because of Jennifer Lopez! (wipes drool). Oh sorry got flashbacks to the movie.

The next movie to be on this list has to be, "Blood in, Blood out."  This movie shows how the Latino community works in South LA.  It is a very good movie and worth the 5 dollar rental.

Next is one of the most uplifting movies, "Stand and Deliver."  “A negative times a negative equals a positive."  This movie will be at the top of any best movie list.

Now "Bella," a heartwarming story, if this doesn’t make you cry, then there is something wrong with you.

"Mi Familia" and "Tortilla Soup" are both stories about the dynamics of Hispanic families and they are fairly accurate. Throw in some hot girls going after the boys, and the siblings fighting, feels like home! Watch out for the chancla!!

"Desperado," what an action movie, got to love the guns in the guitar cases, and the o so hot Salma Hayek running around in a dress that leaves little to the imagination!

The next two I haven’t seen yet but if there was a death threat on Amos for this movie, then I have to watch it. Which movie is that you ask, its "American Me!"  For some reason they like making movies about Mexicans in gangs. There is no stereotyping or stereo-casting in Hollywood is there?? Idk.

OK, the last movie is a movie that speaks the truth, especially in the day and age of Immigration debates.  "A Day Without A Mexican."  I know that it’s supposed to be a parody and takes things to the extremes, but if media is supposed to depict the future, and the what ifs, this can depict it to a ‘T’.

And the best for last, "The Perfect Game." This is not the best because it’s a baseball movie, it's the best because its about Little League Baseball history that was made by the Mexican Little League Team, the team that could. Its about the first and only perfect game thrown in little league baseball history, and guess what, it was thrown by Mexico's team. Probably the best movie I have seen, and I have seen a lot!

Well that is this one Mexican's opinion. If I missed any, then they weren’t remembering. Ha Ha.  Let me know what I missed and I’ll tell u if it’s worth it.

Sunday Morning Thoughts of Andres: Real Football

The NFL season is fast approaching and watching Dallas Cowboy's Football is how I like to spend my Sundays. Waiting for the season to start has me thinking about being a kid and loving football.

When I was a kid, (starting a sentence this way is the first sign that I am officially old) I used to play football in the street at my aunt's house. Actually on the concrete and our timeouts were when the cars would come driving down the road and half time was when Tia Lucy said lunch was ready. We dived for catches on the concrete and would slide out of bounds on the gravel. I still missing skin from my elbow and knees. We would put vicious hits on whatever receiver was dumb enough to leap in the air for a catch. There were no roofs and air conditioning units keeping you cool when the other unit is on the field. In fact, there was no other unit, you played offense and defense and everybody who wanted to play was on the field the whole game.

The "football" we are watching now is the wussifcation of the game. Punting and Fieldgoals? In real football you don't kick, you go for it on 4th down every time. These players are wearing pads and helmets with cushion to avoid concussions so they can prolong their career. When we played, we left it all on the line and didn't worry about being able to play next season. They also have this silly rule about pass interference . Pass interference? For us pass interference was when the quarterback throw the ball too high and it got stuck in the oak tree hanging over the street. I am not going to get started on "Late Hits" on the quarterback.

All I am saying is real football players play on concrete, and not on a football field with pads.

An old school football warrior,
Andres

A Hispanic Republican Could Be President

I never thought the first of the two major political parties to nominate the first Hispanic presidential candidate would be the Republican Party. Wow, this really is a shocker for me!

Click here to read a snippet on theweek.com and here for commentary from NewsTaco.com.

Did you ever think there was a chance that the Republicans would nominate a Latino before the Democrats?

President's Address on the Debt Ceiling

Above is the speech President Obama gave to the nation explaining the status of the deficit and debt ceiling issue.

I thought the president did a good job explaining the crisis and why he is pushing for the deal he proposes. He put it in a way that the average citizen can understand and framed the debate between the idea of shared sacrifices versus preserving the wealthy's tax breaks.

I agree with the president that their should be shared sacrifices and by a combination of spending cuts and tax reform we can balance the budget.

I am intentionally keeping this post brief because I know people's heads are probably spinning with all the facts and opinions that have been laid out this past month.

I will end with my suggestion to President Obama and the Congress; separate the two issues. Give the deficit issue its due diligence and work out a solution that is healthy and right for the country and not something that is being forced to be compromised while both branches of government hold guns to the same hostage's head, the American people. Send a clean debt ceiling bill to the president and continue to work on creating more jobs and balancing the budget.

All-Star Game Boycott

I still don't get this whole blog thing, but if I must I must.

I believe we as Hispanics should take a stand with this immigration thing. Arizona is the state that started these anti-Hispanic laws. They have a high valued event this coming week. One that they have been waiting years for.

If you haven't guessed it by now, it's the Major League Baseball's All-Star Game. It's an event in which players and celebs compete against each other in a softball game, home run derby, and concluding with the All-Star Game. It is a big event for the state, the MLB, and advertisers across the country.

We should boycott the game and all that leads up to it. Not only attending it, but watching it on television. I believe that it will not only show Arizona that we mean business, but also the networks and advertisers.

I firmly believe that the players and celebs should boycott this event as well. With Hispanics making up about 30% of the players in the league, more than either of the other three major sports in the United States, they and us should use this opportunity to take a stand against blatant racism.

Pathway To Leadership

Senator Dick Durbin, Democrat from Illinois, has re-introduced the DREAM Act in the U.S. Senate. The DREAM Act will give undocumented people, who immigrated to the U.S. as a child by their parents, legal status. These were children who did not make a decision to come to the U.S. but are here because of decisions that their parents made for them. These children have been educated in our public schools and depending on the state they reside in, can attend college, but after graduation they will not be able to be legally hired anywhere.

The Republican Senator from Texas, John Cornyn often cites his support for a version of the DREAM Act, but has only voted for it once in 2003. Recently, he was giving a speech at the NALEO convention in San Antonio and was interrupted for his record on the DREAM Act. With the re-introduction of the bill and the treatment he received from NALEO, it looks like John Cornyn has a chance to change minds.

Senator Cornyn has a chance to be included in the next version of Profiles in Courage. I have come up with plan for Senator Cornyn to earn a "pathway to leadership."

1. Sign up to be a sponsor of the bill
2. Work to change what he thinks is wrong with the bill
3. Actively lobby other Republican Senators to join him
4. Help recruit House Republicans and public support for the bill
5. Most importantly, vote for the DREAM Act

The Senator has a chance to make his actions match his rhetoric. We will have to wait and see if he has the courage to do it. I hope he doesn't choose the Senator McCain route and sell out.

Burger Basics

As we come to another year of Fourth of July festivities. It reminds me of the way many Americans might celebrate the holiday. One of them being with an old fashioned cookout.

Now I have expressed myself to my peers at the TNA Show, how a good old fashioned burger should take precedence on this great occasion and that the masking of the great beefyness and open fire is just outrageous.

Now many of you will pull out the gas grill and for the point I'm trying to make, we will leave that debate for another day. Today its about the burger and all of it's simple glory. Now some people I talk to have told me how they love to mix their beef with various seasonings and pre mixed concoctions. And to them I say, how dare you. How dare you cheaply, dress up a hooker and parade her in front of your family as pristine. Shoving stale, over-marketed and overpriced seasonings into peoples mouths and expecting them to praise what you have cluelessly gelled together.

Now as the fellas on the TNA show like to call me, Culinary Scientist, I cannot sit by, nor tongue tied and watch as people pawn these epicurean disasters off, as some sort of great foodie experience. Now I get people like to show off and even believe that they can pull off some great culinary adventure. After all its just cooking, right? So wrong. All you have succeeded in doing, most of the time, is grilling individual meatloaves. Then they are placed in between hamburger buns and told to your unsuspecting guests that they are the best burgers in the world.BULLSHIT!

A burger should be bold, yet simple enough for an eight year old to assemble. Have a natural taste with subtle help from kitchen staples (salt and pepper). And these spices should only go on top of the meat not worked into it like a deep tissue massage. And please people, use some fat in your beef product. If you go under the 20% fat ratio, I hope you have plenty of beer cause most of the time these burgers are going to dry out on you. On the other hand if you go over that same ratio of meat to fat, you will see your money drip away into the fire and turn your 1/2 pound burger into about a 1/4 pound when it's all said and done.

Now for the toppings. I like to keep these to a minimum also, as to not mask the heart and soul of what I am trying to enjoy. Now we can have the old mustard versus ketchup debate. But that falls under the "debate for another day" category. Now you have your lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, onions and cheese. Now all of these have cousins that can easily destroy the essence of the burger and your pocket book, so be careful.

On to the more exotic or as I like to say shameful toppings. Avocados, mushrooms, chili, watercress and barbecue sauce have no business in or around a hamburger. We are not going to reinvent the wheel, and again mask the glory of almighty beef.Reserve this kind of behavior to yourself and to the privacy of your own backyard. If any of these has entered your mind during a backyard bar b que then you are truly a lost cause.

Now I'm not saying don't expand your horizons and explore possibilities. I'm saying don't give me meatloaf or some other faux burger and expect me to praise your failure. The best burgers are done with as little help to the beef as possible and the rest(toppings) are just after thoughts.

So if you plan to cook burgers this holiday weekend, just some words of advice, to help you on your way to grill jockey supremacy.

I Am The Favorite

At first I was hesitant to write a blog because I am just a common man with no opinions that would appeal to the masses. But since I am forced to voice my opinion on any subject (according to my co-host Andres). I guess I will write about being the favorite child in a family. It comes with a lot of responsibility, more than the others can even fathom.

You have to be in charge of everything while allowing the oldest to believe he is in charge. If you mess up any way it is a bigger deal than the others, so if you are gonna do it I say go big. It's gonna be bigger than it is anyway.

My brother hates the fact that I am the favorite, but he still insists that others follow that thought. It makes me wonder if he has a favorite child. If I know him it is the girl. Cause in his eyes his girl can do nothing wrong.

To go back to the responsibilities of the favorite child. He has to make sure the parents are OK, while leaving the majority of the burden on the oldest without blame. It makes it hard for the favorite to move with his life. So if this burden has been thrust upon you without any wanting, just remember you are the FAVORITE CHILD!!!!!

The Real Focus

Our friends at NewsTaco.com posted a blog post by Dr. Henry Flores Ph.D entitled Hispanic? Latino? Mexicano? Chicano? Does it Matter?

This post brings to light a conversation that, according to Dr Flores, Latinos are having "online and in various closed door meetings." I agree with him. In fact I find myself discussing this issue quite often in both venues. I am not going to get into the "I don't like labels but I label myself this way" conversation, which usually ends with me looking for BC Powder in my wife's purse to make the sharp pain in my head go away. It seems some are looking for people to rally under one banner and trying to figure out what the banner should be.

Some of the titles suggested and used by some are Hispanic, Chicano, Mexicano, Latino, and/or Tejano. Everyone has their own preference on how to describe themselves whether it is one of these or a host of others to choose from. Each one has its own meaning and personal connotations attached to it. At the end of the conversation, I don't think people are brought closer together and ready to unify under one banner.

I would equate stopping "to find our banner to unite under one voice" to "waiting for our time"; both slogans tend to stop the progress of a movement. In my opinion, once we picked a name to call ourselves, we will alienate some portions of our coalition. If we choose the word Hispanics, some people who prefer Latinos will either drop out of the movement or start their own movement under a different banner and vice versa. I think it is detrimental to our cause to label ourselves. It benefits the movement to focus on our agenda instead.

Our banner should be our issues. We should let them figure out who and what we are and how to deal with us. I contend it does not matter what we call ourselves if we do not succeed in advancing our agenda. Always remember, the winners write the history books and we can pick a name when it is time to write.

When they want to talk about Hispanics, Latinos, Chicanos, Mexicanos, and Tejanos, we should talk about education, healthcare, comprehensive immigration, jobs, and other issues that affect our community. I honestly believe that we should not waste time or energy debating each other over what we are going to call ourselves or what uniform we are wearing, and instead use that energy to define and advance our agenda.

If we are really intent on wearing a label, let's start with this: "Voter"!

Father's Day

Every year Father's Day rolls around. And every year we are subjected to bad gifts (i.e. ugly ties, not so funny t shirts and coffee mugs, all telling us how old we are or getting) and guilted into spending time with our kids.

Now don't get me wrong, I'll receive these gifts with open arms and probably will keep these for the rest of my days. But can I get a little more effort into the thought process of what kind of person I am. I rarely wear ties and when I do, it's usually for a special occasions which requires a little class and does not light up or have the Three Stooges (who I love, could do without Shemp though). My T-shirts usually have a sports team logo or makes fun of situations rather than me. I drink coffee only in the winter months (I live in Texas), but prefer tea.

I know the kids are still distinguishing whats marketing and what dad really enjoys, but can mom be any help? Or does she get some kind of pleasure at watching me fake a smile at these so called presents from the heart. If any of this is pulled on Mother's Day, without a just kidding form of jewelry, I'd be on the bottom of a two story outhouse until next Mother's Day.

Which brings me to my second point. Why on Mother's day do us fathers gladly take the kids and send our wives off to wherever they prefer, day spa, shopping with friends. But I'm guilted in spending time with my kids? Isn't that reversed? Shouldn't they wanna spend time with me doing and going to the places I enjoy? But I feel that I have to go play around of golf early in the morning, so that I can come back, as soon as I'm done, and spend the rest of the day spending time with my family. And God forbid that I've enjoyed a few Bud Lights while out that early. But not an eyelash is batted if mimosas are served during a Mother's Day Breakfast/Brunch.

Now, I know that some who read this blog will interpret it as me not wanting to be with my family (especially the women folk). And if you do please read again. I was raised on the importance of family (familia) and those without it truly have nothing. What I'm blogging about, is taking the time out to understand your dad/spouse for one day, because we won't complain as long as our families are safe and happy. All year we are willing to go that extra mile, give him an inch, and he'll always remember.

Tony Romo Call

Andres ran into Tony Romo on his wedding day at Martin Weiss Park in Dallas, and has him call in to the show. It didn't take long to figure out it wasn't the real Tony Romo! The only one fooled was Neiman at the beginning of the call, he is a young Romo fan! Check it out!
